Mixed Messages?

Earlier today I was driving behind a nice new Mercedes with the customized license plate, “TITHE.” After double-checking that there’s no other meaning of tithe that I’d forgotten, I tried to create a credible story this person could use to justify the obvious mixed messages sent by this odd pairing. From simply encouraging the practice of tithing (“Yeah, easy for you to say in your Mercedes!”), to bragging (“I’m so rich, I can tithe and drive a Mercedes”), to honest full disclosure (“Perhaps he’s just a minister for a wealthy, generous church who’s sick of people asking him how he can afford a Mercedes?”) – I could think of none.
